Marijuana: Does a body AND mind good.
Marijuana has recently emerged as an advocated method of relieving more than just the itch to relax. While studies and research increase on the plant we know as Cannabis, so does the list of positive benefits it can provide. But just how does marijuana help our body and mind? Let’s start with the chemical compounds that allow the plant to provide relief not only for pain, but moods, as well.
What’s inside matters most
Cannabis plants have approximately 400 different compounds, including the two most discussed – cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But as studies progress, the ‘terps’ or terpenes of the plant are becoming more identified with its therapeutic effects.
Simply said, terpenes are the oils that provide the scent in Cannabis and lend to diversity in strains. Like CBD and THC, terpenes attach to brain receptors and can enhance the effects of your high.
Each cannabis strain has its own terpene content, and the six most common are Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Linalool, Pinene, Humulene and Limonene. When choosing a strain note that these terpenes can enhance THC’s psychoactivity, sedate or calm, suppress appetite, or affect memory retention or alertness.
Laughter is the best medicine
It was said by the infamous stoner Willie Nelson. “The biggest killer on the planet is stress and I still think the best medicine is and always has been cannabis.” While Willie may lack an appropriate MD to make a proper prescription, Cannabis prescribing doctors and advocates are increasing research and recommendations for symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression.
Choosing Sativa strains can support elevating and uplifting your mood or feelings. Sativa plant compounds increase serotonin, which is a key neurotransmitter correlated in regulating learning, mood, sleep, anxiety and appetite.
A study at Washington State University tested the intake amount of differing levels of THC and CBD in relation to using marijuana as an assistance for mood management. It was found that –
- One hit of cannabis high in CBD and lower in THC was preferred in reducing symptoms of depression.
- Two hits of any cannabis strain was successful in reducing anxiety.
- Ten or more hits of cannabis high in both CBD and THC produced the highest decrease in stress levels.
So, like any person and any other mood stimulant – try for yourself, find your own balance, and discover your best solution for the frame of mind or relief you’re searching for.
That feel good feeling
Cannabis can be just as effective for body aches and pains, as it can be for increasing comfort in your mind or mood. Here we’ll talk a little bit more on CBD and Indica strains.
In 2014, the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine completed a survey of 95 participants who found a preference in indica strains for pain, sleep and sedation. In addition, a study of approximately 17,000 cancer patients showed 70% developed increased pain relief and well being after using any type of marijuana.
The CBD compound is primarily responsible for this relief, as it interacts with the receptors in your brain that regulate pain. The compound produces and promotes anti-inflammatory and pain reducing effects. Rising in popularity, not only can you find CBD in your favorite bud, but now in lotions, creams and salves to additionally address muscle pain and soreness.
If you’re sticking to more traditional methods, then in comes Indica. Indica strains are known to have a higher level of CBD vs.THC to produce these relieving effects. In contrary to its counterpart Sativa, Indica increases dopamine, the key neurotransmitter that helps control the brain’s pleasure and benefit receptors.
As we mentioned, over time, Hybrid strains have been introduced to the market. These Hybrids combined Indica and Sativa genes, to create new genetics that can take on characteristics of both strains. Users looking for a combination of effects for mood and pain, can turn to hybrids, and fine tune their needs per THC/CBD levels or Indica/Sativa dominance.
